It is difficult for me to find the words to describe the
desert. When we arrived in the wilds near Green River the sun was already
setting. I climbed from the car and immediately headed for the high sandy hill
that enclosed our campsite. I climbed past prickly olive-colored brush and
baby-cousins’ sand toys to reach the rocky summit. Looking out over the dusty
valley I felt speechless. The desert displays such vistas of freedom. The sky
and the earth stretch endlessly in beautiful, rocky, sandy minimalism. The
desert urges me to run and climb and explore and survive.
