20 Activities, less than $20, for under 20°

This is an informative article that I wrote for HEX Magazine's winter issue.
Click Below to read it.

1. Go sledding or tubing: Try a park like Evergreen in American Fork (200 N. 700 E.) or Mitchell Hollow in Highland (10300 N. 6530 W.). You could head up the canyon to Soldier Hollow (in Midway) or the hills around Tibble Fork (American Fork Canyon).

2. Go snowshoeing: BYU and UVU both offer 1-day shoe rentals for about $10

3. Go shovel the walks in the neighborhood: For your sweet old neighbor or to impress your father-in-law.

4. Go to a concert at Velour or Muse: We’ve featured a few options in our events (page 2), but every weekend and on some weekdays, you get a warm place to listen to local bands.

5. Night skiing at Sundance: Okay, it’s $30 but the 10 extra bucks aren’t much of a sacrifice for some beautiful evening slope time from 4:30pm to 9pm. Sundance also keeps a $10 off coupon on their website for night skiing lift tickets.

6. Go bowling: When it’s just too cold to spend time outside, bowling is always toasty, fun with a group, and the waffle fries at Jack and Jill’s in American Fork are delicious.

7. Ice fishing: If you’re a little rusty, head to Cabela’s in Lehi (2502 Cabela’s Blvd.) on the 16th of 17th of February for a few pointers from the pros.

8. Build a snow igloo: Practice your technique in your backyard before attempting to survive the night in the mountains.

9. Winter camping: boy scouts call it the Klondike, but it doesn’t have to involve the shenanigans of teenagers and the misery of their scoutmasters. Bring your best sleeping bag and test your Survivor Man stamina at one of the campsites up Provo or American Fork canyon.

10. Build an Ice Sculpture: If you’re not the sculptor type, and you’d like to add some semi-natural beauty to your yard, throw a few buckets of water over a small tree every day and watch the icicle creature grow.

11. Ice climbing: this isn’t a great activity for beginners, but if you’re trained in climbing, you can rent gear at BYU’s Outdoors Unlimited.

12. Camp fire: You don’t have to trek up the canyon to enjoy the cozy crackling warmth of a fire. You can always buy a portable fire pit, or build your own with bricks, all while staying within reach of your back door.

13. See a movie: It’s not very original, but there great films being released almost every weekend. You could see this year’s Oscar picks at your local theater or travel north to the Broadway Centre Cinema in Salt Lake (111 E Broadway) to watch the newest indie movie.

14. Go to the library: It may come as a surprise, but Utah county’s libraries often have cool, informative events. Many feature panels on writing, local authors and poets, storytelling, and other interesting literature-based activities.  If the events aren’t your thing, there’s still no better way to withstand the cold than holing up inside and escaping into a good book.

15. Go cross-country skiing: You can pick which of the 9+ ski areas in Utah county will work best for you at Utah.com/ski.

16.Ride Frontrunner and/or Trax to SLC: Sometimes one has to leave the lovely valley to find more adventure. Check out U of U’s new natural history museum or shop around at City Creek.

17.Visit an art museum:  BYU boasts one of the best university art museums in the country. Right now you can see Andy Warhol, an exploration of heroes in contemporary art, pixelated sculpture, and other incredible works. The Woodbury Art Museum in the University mall is another great option that often features the work of UVU students and professors.

18. Shop: University mall may be short an anchor store or two, but the new outlets at Traverse Mountain in Lehi (4477 Fox Trail Circle) are full of higher-end shops like Banana Republic, J.Crew, Polo, and Columbia, all selling at discounted rates. Be warned, the outlets are outside, so a coat is encouraged.

19. Attend a UVU basketball game: Tickets cost anywhere between $3-7 and its an interesting alternative to a movie and frozen yogurt.

20.Have a cup of hot chocolate: The Chocolate dessert café in Orem (212 S. State) lives up to its name, serving cupcakes, brownies, cookies, pastries, and of course, a delicious cup of hot chocolate.
